FRAPS etc.: venting

First of all, I would really like to know why anyone would mention the Alt-Zoom camera when there is no need to use it when I use FRAPS.

2-I am still looking for a place where a step by step tutorial can get me through from the filming to the publishing, and -obviously- via the most essential post-editing part.

3-Now that I know how to set up the Alt-Zoom camera, I know that I will never use it again since FRAPS.

4-Now that I have FRAPS, wrote my audio script, created a gesture scenario timed to my voice input, figured out how to record my voice inworld (hint hint: the headset + a shortkey trigger for locking the voice open. FRAPS records what it hears)…and have reached the next frustration: a simple upload.

5-Jumpcut is acclaimed to be the almighty solution of post-production editing and publishing. That would be groovy is there were no problem uploading the vid. VirtualDub is supposed to compress the files. so I download VirtualDub (free thank goodness), but when I run the clip through VirtalDub, the file comes out bigger than it came in. Good one. At this typing instant, I am uploading my non-compressed clip onto Jumpcut. It’s 15minutes and 35% done.

6-Blip.tv uploaded my clip quite fast. But I can’t edit the movie. So the raw clip is there, clearly needing some trimming. Plus, my plan was to record several short clips and put them together into a seamless movie THANKS to JumpCut’s promises of great and easy editing! 11:03pm39% done.

I wonder. Patience might be the only problem here. Nothing algorithmic at all!

Dare I? I dare: 11:07pm 50% done

11:22pm: no more count down but Jumpcut keeps blabbing away. So I have not clue if this thing is actually still working.

Anyway, want to hear something really funny? or frustrating depending on the point of view…..I just re-read FRAPS’ support text and they mentioned Microsoft Movie Maker. I assumed that I did not have it because I did not ask for it. That’s assumption #2: Microsoft Movie Maker does not come standard. Oh Really!? Ah! well, it’s 11:24pm and I am here to say that yes, i do have MMM on my laptop. I could pull on my hair…..if I were not afraid of a migraine. So, now I am dumping Jumpcut and trying to edit my clips in MMM and upload the finish product on blip.tv.

more update coming soon…..

Finally!!! The answers: click on FRAPS to capture the filming in SL. Then open Microsoft Movie Maker, import a video (browse and find my FRAPS folder), open last SL segment / or open project in MMM to continue to edit it. Edit. Add more segment, figure out the transitions, etc. Save as. Close MMM. Log on Blip.TV. Upload. Find movie to upload (watch for the correct type of file. The browse box might open the MMM movie folder with all the saved documents: the files used to edit in MMM, and the files used to upload). Super super quick upload.

Video Capture Questions

What do the options do?
You can select the folder where Fraps will store all movies in. By default this folder is the same as the directory you installed Fraps into, but you can customise it to save anywhere on your disk. Click the Change button to select a new folder, or the View button to show the current contents of the folder.

The Video Capture Hotkey lets you assign a button that will record movies of the game. To change the Hotkey, click in the box and type a new key to be assigned this function. Clicking Disable will stop the Hotkey from having any effect.

Choosing Half-size will store the movie at half the resolution of the game screen. Full-size will store the movie at the same resolution as the game screen up to 1152×864.

You can choose the frame rate of the output movie from 25fps, 30fps, 50fps, 60fps, or a custom value up to 100fps. Higher values result in smoother playback but will increase the file size. Some video editing programs will treat movies recorded at 25fps as PAL, and those captured at 29.97/30fps as NTSC.

Selecting “Record Sound” will save the game audio along with the video. You can disable this option if you are planning to add your own sound to the video.

When you select “Detect best sound input” Fraps will determine the best input to record the game sound on. If you choose “Use Windows input” the default Windows recording input will be used. The Windows input may not capture all of the game sounds, so you should generally let Fraps detect the input unless you want to capture sound from an external source.
How do I record a movie while running a game?
First select the target framerate for the movie, which indicates how many frames will be included in the movie each second. You can currently choose from 25, 30, 50 or 60 fps.

In the game press the Video Capture Hotkey (F9) when you want to start recording. While recording the frame rate counter will turn red. When you want to end your movie, press the button again to stop recording. You will now find the movie saved in your default folder.
What is the maximum resolution supported by Half/Full-size video capture?
The maximum resolution for Half-size capture is 2560×1600. Full-size video capture is limited to a maximum of 1152×864 (4:3) or 1280×800 (widescreen). If Full-size is selected and the game is set to a resolution higher than the maximum, Fraps will automatically switch to Half-size when recording.
Why is the AVI movie generated by Fraps so big? How can I reduce the size?
The filesize is big because there isn’t enough time to encode the movie while the game is running. The movie frames are slightly compressed, but still require a large amount of disk space due to the high resolutions. Once you have finished capturing you should convert the saved AVI into one of the popular compressed movie formats such as mpeg or divx. Recommended programs for doing this are tmpgenc (Tsunami Mpeg Encoder), and VirtualDub.

Using VirtualDub is quite easy. To create a compressed version of the AVI follow these steps:

  • Start VirtualDub
  • Select File->Open and choose the AVI in the Fraps directory you wish to compress.
  • Select Video->Compression and choose the codec you wish to compress with (usually divx)
  • Select File->Save As AVI and specify a filename for the new AVI.

If you have Windows XP you can also use Windows Movie Maker to compress the video files. If you use Windows Movie Maker it’s recommended that you keep your Fraps video files at 800×600 or under.
Why do I get a source format error when I try to compress with DIVX?
Divx6 places restrictions on the video resolution for many of its profiles and this may cause an error when handling large Fraps videos. In Virtualdub you can go to the Divx codec configuration screen and set it to use the “Unconstrained Profile”. This will allow you to encode movies of any resolution and won’t generate the source format error.
How do I stop the frame rate counter being saved on my movies?
The frame rate counter shouldn’t be saved on your movies. What you may be seeing is Fraps showing the frame rate of your media player. Try exiting Fraps before playing your videos and you should see clean images. If this doesn’t help you can disable the frame rate counter before recording by pressing the Overlay Display hotkey.
When I view the movie I saved the video skips and the sound crackles. What’s wrong?
Your media player may be having trouble keeping up with the large amount of data Fraps has written to disk. Fraps is optimised for processing large amounts of data, but many players are not. If they can’t read the data fast enough skips in the video and audio may be present.

Keep in mind the raw data saved to disk should be fine. If you encode the video into a compressed format you will likely end up with a video file that plays perfectly due to the greatly reduced file size.

You can also lower the movie frame rate or use a lower resolution to reduce the data saved to the hard disk.
How can I adjust the volume of the sound that is recorded?
You must configure the volume through the “Sounds and Audio Devices” item in the Control Panel. Use the following steps:

  • Click on the Control Panel and select Sounds And Audio.
  • Click on the Audio tab.
  • Find the Sound Recording device and click Volume.
  • Adjust the volume for the Input that Fraps is recording from. This is usually named “What U Hear”, “Record Master”, or “Stereo Mixer”.

If you can’t see the correct Input on screen you may need to enable it by clicking on Properties in the menu and ensuring all Inputs have a check beside their name.
Where can I find the custom Fraps FPS1 codec?
The Fraps codec (FPS1) is put on the system when you install Fraps. If you’ve reinstalled Windows you will also need to reinstall Fraps in order to play back your movies.

Please keep in mind that if you want to give your raw footage to another person they will also need to have Fraps installed.

Question: If F9 enables the recording, when do i use Alt-Zoom camera? Does F9 record following my curser move (as my camera)? I really need some help with this. [sight]

March 14, 2008
I finished my first Machinima movie yesterday (see http://willowshenlin.blip.tv). Really happy to have figured out the whole thing. Here is the latest info on the full version of FRAPS (finally figured out my PayPal account thing) -$37:

Members Area – Fraps 2.9.4

Fraps

Major changes in this version:

  • Added support for DirectX 10

  • Added option to monitor Desktop Window Manager under Vista

  • Added Direct Stream sound recording for Vista

  • Numerous crash and compatibility fixes

Notes: The demo FRAPS limited my recording to 30seconds segments. This should allow me to record as long as I wish. The absence of watermark is going to make the movies a little bit cleaner too.

How-to: Record SL movies

–Pre-flight checklist–

Step 1: Control Panel
1-Plug in your phone-mic headset
2-Control Panel /Sounds and Audio Devices / Audio (select your headset otherwise Microsoft will keep the default) / Apply / OK

128 or lower is easier on the computer (higher if landscape shots or distance objects)
Mouse Sensitivity

Click on Edit / Preferences / Input & Camera
Increase mouse sensitivity

Mouselook Shortcut: M
Close Chat text entry field
Edit / Preferences / Text Chat /
Close chat after hitting return / apply-ok
Hit return (chat should disappear)

Type M (otherwise, use View / Mouselook)
Use ESCAPE key to get out of Mouselook
Window Size
File / Set Window Size/ 640×480
Get Rid of UI (Turn on and off using these shortcut keys)
HIDE/Show interface: CTRL-ALT-F1
>>Go into Mouselook (M), Hit ESCAPE or M again, then get UI back (CTRL-ALT-F1)

Step 4: Action!
Record
Click F9

Stop recording
Click F9 again (counter should turn yellow)
Preview what you’ve filmed
Go to Desktop / FRAPS / [secondlife movie]
double click to open (will open in the default software. Mine is Microsoft Media Player)
>note that sometimes the movie does some jerking at the beginning. Allow for post-editing by recording a little bit longer in order to dismiss the first few seconds of jerking.
>need to switch from touchpad to external mouse. Filming should become smoother when panning or orbiting.

Step 5. Post-Production Editing
Open Microsoft Movie Maker
Import Video
Drag clips in tab to create movie
Select effects
Post to Blip.tv

(Forget Jumpcut and forget VirtualDub. If you have Microsoft Movie Maker, no need for extra steps such as compressing. It’s doing it automatically. Just make sure to choose that document when uploading to blip.tv)

How-to: Upload pics, textures, and slides in SL

Several techniques exist:

1-$10 per upload via the SL UI: simple click, browse, upload. Your pic (.jpg) shows up in your texture folder

2- Flickr2SL board and Flickr stream: Miki Gymnast’s Flickr2SL is free (Rezzable 04 (152,111,648) but you must own the land for this to work.
How-to: upload images to Flickr, tell Flickr2SL board to look at the right stream, navigate the Flickr stram using a couple of button on the board. (Meredith Wesolowski, SLED 3/09/08)

Also Snagit has a plugin to upload any snapshots to Flickr. Other suggestions: pre-loading .jpgs of PPT -upload with Snagit and display with Flickr2SL board.

3- FreeView (Ross Perkins, SLED 3/07/08)

How-to: Create Gestures and Animations in SL

-Several options and choice to create gestures and animations in SL-

Organizing gestures and animations into a scenario -from existing scripts

1-http://youtube.com/watch?v=6WKo4G8aQBc&feature=related “How to use gestures”-Thanks Torley

2. http://youtube.com/watch?v=WplYhxyFd3M Speech gestures -copy from library into gesture folder, drag onto avatar to activate. talk to initiate gesture.

3-Organize the animation overrider (ao)
(note: need to find ways to modify the scenarios offered in my current ao. Limited lines of actions? Also, when I first tried my ao, the gestures seemed to stick with the avatar for a while even after the ao is off. A “stop all animations” command was needed to override the ao even after I dropped it off the av.)

.http://secondlife.com/community/resident_resource.php?category=1 animations

communication tools http://secondlife.com/community/resident_resource.php?category=16

4-gesture-scenario for filming:
>Inventory / Create Gesture
>Rename gesture
>Add or Move Up/Down animations/sounds/wait/chat/
>Save
>Preview
>Activate
Make sure that trigger is not used for another gesture
>Change shortkey trigger so that you can start the animation without moving the mouse.
Film gesture with audio
>click F9 (start fiming)
>click F2 (my animation shortkey for “Second Life intro”) & “v” (my shortcut for inworld voice. I set up FRAPS so that it records what it hears -double check Control Panel / Audio /input choice -mine is headphones)

Creating from scratch (’scripting’) gestures and animations

1-not my first choice…ahah. Will get back to this once I figure out scenarios based on existing gestures in my library and what I can find that is full-permission.
